Malik’s love for music began in middle school. The church choir and band provided vital refuges for him as he navigated the challenges of homelessness and learning disabilities. Despite struggling with literacy, Malik dreamed of higher education – a goal realized when one of his special education teachers referred him to the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) for the support needed to attend Longwood University. Today, Malik’s dream has come to fruition: as he is now a college graduate who serves as the Band Director for his former middle and high schools, overseeing ensembles from marching band to percussion. Walking the same halls he once roamed as a student, Malik now stands as a powerful role model for the next generation. In 2025, Malik was nominated for the DARS Champion Award, an honor recognizing individuals who embody resilience and achievement.
